A few months back, Nicolas Zart shared with me a statistic that I’m still trying to understand.
America is the outlier in how we own and operate our aviation infrastructure.
The following chart shows the distribution of private participation in airport ownership.
North America checks in at 1% privately owned.
The irony is a comedy.
The next generation of aviation is likely to require an uptick in private participation.
Why?
Government agencies are not the most efficient systems. We need private funding, the entrepreneurial spirit, and the audacity to create change.
Last night on my drive down Valley, I listened to a podcast on this very topic.
Bob Poole parses through the pros and cons of privatization. It’s a must-listen.
And to me - the pros of privatization outweigh the cons. Better rates, more flights, enhanced user experience. It’s not even close.
However, the US Gov is unlikely to relinquish its monopolistic control over our teleportation system.
We love the FAA, but there has to be a better way.
If we’re going to push through the next frontier, aviation may need private motivation.
